This Sunday, 1 November, is World Vegan Day, and it kicks off a whole month of people trying plant-based living for the first time. If that sounds like a big leap, here's the good news: you don't have to change everything at once.
Start with one thing you use every single day. For most of us, that's milk. It goes in coffee, tea, porridge, cereal and sauces, so one swap quietly changes dozens of meals a week. And it's the swap most people find easiest to stick with.
Why milk is the easiest place to start
Plant milk is already the plant-based food Europeans buy most happily. In Germany, Europe's largest plant-based market, plant milk sales grew 7.7% in volume in 2025 and now make up 9.2% of all milk sold (GFI Europe via vegconomist). France, Italy and Spain also saw plant-based sales volumes rise last year.
There's a simple reason it sticks. Swapping milk doesn't ask you to learn new recipes. Your coffee is still your coffee and your porridge is still your porridge. Only the milk changes, and you can try oat, almond, soy or cashew until you find the one you love.
What's really in the carton
Shop-bought plant milk has to last weeks on a shelf, so it usually needs help. Flip a carton over and you'll often find stabilisers, gums, emulsifiers and added oils alongside the oats or almonds. The headline ingredient can be a surprisingly small part of what you're drinking.
Then there's the carton itself. A household that drinks a litre every couple of days gets through well over a hundred cartons a year, and most of them are a mix of paper, plastic and aluminium that is hard to recycle.
Cost adds up too. Plant milk still costs more than dairy in many shops. In Germany it was about 10% more expensive on average in 2025, a gap GFI Europe puts down to higher VAT on plant milk (vegconomist).
Fresh plant milk in three minutes with Milky Plant Plus
Milky Plant Plus makes fresh plant milk at home in under three minutes, with no soaking, no nut bags and no squeezing. You add your nuts, seeds or grains, fill the water tank, press a button, and the machine does the rest.
Because you choose the ingredients, there's nothing in your glass you didn't put there: no preservatives, no gums, no emulsifiers. Want it sweeter? Add a date. Creamier? Use a few more cashews. It's your recipe.
Good bases to try in your first month:
- Oat: mild, creamy and cheap. The easiest first swap for tea and coffee.
- Almond: light and slightly nutty. Lovely on cereal and in smoothies.
- Soy: the highest in protein of the common plant milks, and great for cooking.
- Cashew: rich and silky. Ideal for lattes, sauces and hot chocolate.
Your 30-day World Vegan Month milk challenge
One swap, four weeks, no pressure. Here's a simple plan to make dairy-free milk a habit by the end of November.
- Week 1 (1–7 Nov): Start with your morning drink. Swap only the milk in your tea or coffee. Try oat first, since it's the closest to dairy in a hot drink.
- Week 2 (8–14 Nov): Move on to breakfast. Use plant milk on cereal, in porridge and in overnight oats. Try almond for a lighter taste.
- Week 3 (15–21 Nov): Take it into the kitchen. Cook with it: creamy soups, mashed potatoes, pancakes and white sauce. Soy and cashew work best here.
- Week 4 (22–30 Nov): Find your favourite. Make a blend, such as oat and cashew, add a date or a pinch of cinnamon, and settle on the milk you'll keep making.
By December, you won't be "doing a challenge". You'll just have a better milk in your fridge.
The secret ingredient: better water
Most of every glass of plant milk is water, so the water you use shapes the taste more than anything else. Tap water can carry a chlorine note or the chalky edge of hard water, and both come through in a delicate oat or almond milk.
That's where The Watery comes in. It's Milky Plant's countertop reverse osmosis purifier, so it sits next to your Milky Plant Plus with no plumbing or installation. Fill your milk maker from The Watery and you get a cleaner, softer, sweeter-tasting milk, plus great-tasting water for everything else you drink this month.
When is World Vegan Day 2026? World Vegan Day falls on 1 November every year, which in 2026 is a Sunday. It opens World Vegan Month, which runs through November. The day was started in 1994 by The Vegan Society to mark its 50th anniversary (Vegan Society).
Do I have to go fully vegan for World Vegan Month? Not at all. Many people use November to try one or two swaps and see how they feel. Milk is a great first step because it touches so many meals.
What is the easiest dairy-free milk to start with? Oat milk is the most popular first choice. It's mild, creamy and works well in tea and coffee. Almond, soy and cashew are good next steps.
Is homemade plant milk better than shop-bought? Homemade milk has only the ingredients you add, with no preservatives, gums or emulsifiers, and no carton to throw away. Shop-bought versions are often fortified with calcium and vitamins, so if you switch fully, keep an eye on those nutrients across the rest of your diet.
Start this World Vegan Month with one small swap
You don't need a new diet, a new cookbook or a new identity to join World Vegan Month. You just need a better glass of milk. Swap it in your coffee on 1 November, and by the end of the month you'll have a fresh, additive-free habit that's kinder to your body and the planet.
Milky Plant Plus makes it a three-minute job, and The Watery makes every batch taste its best.
