What’s REALLY in Your Store-Bought Plant Milk? We Made It Fresh Instead

In recent years, plant milk has soared in popularity, becoming a staple in everything from morning coffees to smoothie bowls. Almond, oat, soy, cashew the options are endless. But have you ever turned over the carton and really looked at the ingredients list on your favorite store-bought plant milk?

If you have, you might have noticed something surprising: oils, gums, stabilizers, preservatives, and sweeteners. Suddenly, that “simple” oat milk doesn't seem so simple.

The Hidden Ingredients in Store-Bought Plant Milk

Many commercial plant milks contain additives to improve shelf life, texture, and flavor. Here are a few commonly added ingredients:

  • Vegetable oils (often rapeseed or sunflower oil): used for creaminess, but can add unnecessary fats.
  • Gums and thickeners (like gellan gum, guar gum, or carrageenan): help create a milk-like texture, but may cause digestive issues for some.
  • Preservatives (like potassium sorbate): ensure the product can last for weeks or even months unrefrigerated.
  • Added sugars or flavorings: even “unsweetened” varieties sometimes include “natural flavors,” which are not always so natural.

While these ingredients aren’t necessarily harmful, they’re not always what health-conscious consumers are expecting in a product marketed as “clean” or “natural.”

Curious to know what plant milk could taste like without all the additives, we decided to make our own. We used just raw ingredients oats, almonds, cashews and water. That’s it.

The difference was immediate. The texture was smoother, the taste richer and more authentic. Without added oils or emulsifiers, we found the milk separated in the fridge but a quick shake brought it back to life. And the best part? We knew exactly what we were drinking.

Freshly made plant milk has a shorter shelf life, yes but that’s a sign it’s real food. No preservatives, no fillers just pure nourishment.

Why Fresh is Best

Making your own plant milk allows you to:

  • Control ingredients: Add natural sweeteners, spices, or nothing at all.
  • Avoid waste: Say goodbye to single-use cartons.
  • Tailor your blends: Love oat-almond mix with a pinch of cinnamon? Go for it.

It’s simpler than it seems and more rewarding than you’d expect.

If you’re trying to eat more mindfully and reduce unnecessary additives in your diet, fresh plant milk is a great place to start. We found that by making it ourselves, we gained not only better flavor but greater peace of mind.

And with compact countertop appliances that make fresh plant milk at the push of a button, like the one we tried from Milky Plant, going fresh has never been more convenient.
