Happy Families Have Ditched The Carton

Slide 1 of 4

What your plant milk carton is actually made of.

1. It's not really paper.

The "paperboard" carton in your bin is a six-layer composite paperboard, three layers of polyethylene plastic, and one layer of aluminium foil. To recycle it, a specialist plant has to pulp the paper and separate the plastic and aluminium. Most UK councils don't collect cartons for this. Most cartons collected don't get processed. Most "recycled" cartons get downcycled into roof tiles, then thrown away anyway.

2. The lid is worse.

The screw cap is HDPE plastic. The plastic ring around the spout is LDPE. Neither is recycled with the carton, even when the carton itself is. You're throwing away 4-6 grams of single-use plastic per carton, every time.

3. Multiply it by your household.

The average UK plant-milk household goes through 2-3 cartons a week. That's 156 cartons a year. Over a decade the lifetime of a Milky Plant that's 1,560 cartons. Per household. Just for plant milk.

One machine. Every plant milk. Zero cartons.
