This is WHY you should heat your Soy Milk

If you don’t heat your homemade soy milk, harmful bacteria may grow in the milk. In fact, raw, unheated soy milk can be dangerous to consume for several important reasons and I’m going to dish out the reasons why.

But first, let’s talk about the origins of Soy Milk. Soy milk originated in China, where it has been consumed for over 2,000 years. It was traditionally made by soaking and grinding soybeans with cold water, then cooking the resulting slurry. The earliest written records of soy milk date back to the Han Dynasty (202 BCE - 220 CE).

Initially, soy milk was primarily used as a step in making tofu rather than as a beverage. It became popular as a drink in China during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 CE) and later spread throughout East Asia, particularly in countries like Japan, Korea, and Taiwan.

The beverage gained global popularity in the 20th century as a dairy alternative, particularly among vegetarians, vegans, and those with lactose intolerance. Today, soy milk is produced commercially worldwide and remains one of the most popular plant-based milk alternatives.

Nowadays, soy milk can be made in the comfort of your home but there are ways to make it and one of them is to ensure you heat them before consumption. The reason for this is that raw soybeans contain proteins that interfere with protein digestion and can cause pancreatic problems if consumed regularly. It also contains oligosaccharides that can cause digestive discomfort and gas.

Therefore, heat treatment helps break down compounds that can interfere with mineral absorption.

For safety and optimal nutrition, soy milk should always be heated to at least 100°C (212°F) during the production process. This is why having a proper soy milk maker with heating capabilities is crucial.
